The Hammonds in Alaska

Jack and Sue in Alaska   Jack and Sue Hammond are twenty miles up Tracy Arm, midway between Juneau and Ketchikan. They sailed for two weeks on a friends small boat. Brrr!
Jack with fish   Here is Jack with a friend on the Nushgatak near Bristol Bay. There is nothing better than Bristol Bay King salmon and vegetables, freshly picked from your own garden.

Jack and Sue Hammond at Home

Jack and Sue are displaying the bounty from their one acre vegetable garden. They have donated approximately 3,000 pounds to food banks and a lot to their friends as well. The garden is still going strong with winter squash, pumpkins, broccolli, lettuce bok choi, the list goes on and on.   Hammonds garden
Jack and Sue hatched and raised mallard ophan ducklings this summer. Mom was hit by a truck and left a nest full of eggs. Here are the ducks having been being released into a neighbor's pond. Quite an adventure for the ducklings and for Sue and Jack.   Ducklings

New Addition to BEH

Fiona, the office hound, is pleased to announce the arrival of her best friend Newman. Newman is an Irish Setter puppy who is now seven months old, and joins the Beery-Elsner household as a potential show dog and perennial clown. He is pictured here relaxing in his back yard, and entertaining his cousin J.J. for a recent play date.

Fiona is now two years old and continues to maintain her role at BEH as Chief of Staff. Her many duties include calming anxious clients and staff members, making sure the refrigerator is well-stocked, and generally managing morale in the office. She welcomes gifts of any kind of dog treat, shares everyone’s lunch and naps frequently to maintain her constant positive attitude.

Jack Hammond goes to South Korea and India for Wholistic Peace Institute of Portland

Jack joined Gary Spanovich, Director of the Wholistic Peace Institute of Portland, on an extended trip in January to South Korea and India to perform the Peace business of the Institute. Jack is an Advisor to the Institute.

It was a very intensive and busy trip but very rewarding. Some highlights included the following:

1. Attendance at a 4 day International Peace Conference in Seoul. Participants included dignitaries from all over the globe;

2. A day of meetings with Service for Peace, an NGO providing significant humanitarian aid to the needy in North Korea. The last time Jack was in Korea in 1989 he served as a senior legal advisor to Combined Forces Command (US and ROK) regarding a simulated invasion of the South by the North. From that experience Jack believes that a peaceful solution is much preferable to a military response;

3. A meeting in New Delhi with an Anglican Bishop and President of an Association of 5000 churches in India who is building schools for untouchable street kids. The Bishop himself is of the untouchable caste;

4. A series of meetings in Dharamsala, India with the Home Secretary of the Tibetan Government in Exile regarding financial assistance to the 53 Tibetan refugee camps in India and Nepal.

There also were a number of conversations with representatives of the Dalai Lama concerning an anticipated visit of the Dalai Lama to Portland in 2010 and solicitation of the Dalai Lama of his endorsement of  a World Peace Center in the South Water Front Project. This project has been in the works for a number of years and is supported by the City of Portland, OHSU, Portland State, and by the developers of the South Water Front Project.

Jack's return trip lasted 75 hours and he is  experiencing acute jet lag.

Best in breed finalist at BEH

Fiona, the office hound, is proud to report that her best friend Dan, a champion Irish Setter owned by Pam and Paul, recently competed in the Irish Setter Club of America National Specialty Show held in Phoenix, Arizona. As can be seen in the action shots below, he strutted his stuff in style! In tough national competition, featuring 700 Irish Setters, Dan was a finalist in the Best of Breed competition. Not bad considering it was 95 degrees out and Dan experienced his first airplane ride getting to Phoenix!! Fiona and Dan are now strategizing their upcoming show careers – so check back for more news!   Dan showing
